Cornwall Liberal Democrats express deep concern over Cornwall Council’s proposal to close seven adult education centres across the Duchy, including those in Camelford, Callington, Torpoint, Saltash, Launceston, Penzance, and St Austell. These centres provide vital educational opportunities, particularly for residents in rural areas, and their closure could significantly impact access to lifelong learning.

Councillor Hilary Frank, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Saltash Essa and Spokesperson for Children and Families at Cornwall Council, stated:

“The proposed closures are a short-sighted response to financial pressures. Adult education centres are more than just places of learning; they are lifelines for individuals seeking to improve their skills, gain employment, and contribute positively to our community. Closing these centres, especially without thorough consultation with local stakeholders, undermines the value of education and the future prosperity of Cornwall.”

The Council cites decreased enrollment post-pandemic and increased operational costs as reasons for the proposed closures. However, the Liberal Democrats argue that the decision fails to consider the long-term benefits of adult education and the disproportionate effect on rural communities. Many learners will face significant travel challenges to alternative centres, and online learning is not a feasible option for all, particularly in areas with limited internet connectivity.

Ben Maguire, Liberal Democrat MP for North Cornwall, has also expressed severe concern over the decision, highlighting the lack of consultation with local MPs and communities. He stated, “These adult education centres are valuable learning sites for my constituents in Camelford, Launceston, and their surrounding areas. For many, traveling to an alternative centre simply isn’t realistic, and this decision risks cutting off access to essential education and skills services.” 

The Liberal Democrats call on Cornwall Council to halt the proposed closures and engage in meaningful consultation with local communities, town councils, and other stakeholders to explore alternative solutions that preserve access to adult education across Cornwall.
