Economic Growth Scrutiny – Adult Education Update
This week, we discussed Cornwall Council’s Workforce and Skills Strategy. While the committee unanimously supported the recommendations within the strategy, we emphasised the need for a stronger focus on creating more apprenticeships and training opportunities for skilled tradespeople to address local labour shortages.
The topic of the proposed closure of seven adult education centres was also raised. In response, the committee added a further recommendation: ‘The committee will not support the closure of any adult education centres.’ These centres play a vital role in equipping people with the skills they need to support Cornwall’s economy, and their closure would seem counterproductive to the Workforce and Skills Strategy itself.
It’s important to note that the role of a scrutiny committee is to act as a critical friend; providing insight and recommendations, but we are not the formal decision-makers. This means the council’s leadership can choose to ignore our recommendations. However, I firmly believe it is our responsibility to represent the concerns of learners and local communities by making our position on this decision clear.
Adult education is a cornerstone of lifelong learning, and its importance to Cornwall’s workforce cannot be overstated. The Liberal Democrats will continue to advocate for sustainable, accessible solutions for all.
