Cornwall Liberal Democrats Oppose Cuts to Cornwall Council’s Handyperson Service

Cornwall Liberal Democrats are strongly opposing Cornwall Council’s proposal to cut the Handyperson Service, a vital resource for vulnerable residents across Cornwall. The service, which supports people aged 60 and over, as well as those with a disability, provides affordable and reliable assistance for everything from minor repairs to more significant household maintenance.

The Conservative-controlled Cornwall Council is planning to discontinue the Handyperson Service from 1st April, citing rising costs. Last year, the service cost the council £170,000, with estimates suggesting it could rise to £225,000 this year. However, the Liberal Democrats argue that the value of this service far outweighs its cost, particularly for those who are elderly, disabled, or housebound, ensuring their safety and comfort within their own homes.

Cllr Adrian Parsons, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Housing and Planning and Councillor for Altarnun & Stoke Climsland, said:

“The Handyperson Service is a lifeline for many vulnerable people in Cornwall, including the elderly and disabled. The council’s decision to cut this essential service will leave countless residents without the support they need to maintain their homes. For those of us who rely on this service, it is about much more than just fixing things; it’s about trust, reliability, and, most importantly, safety. The financial savings from this cut do not outweigh the harm it will cause to some of Cornwall’s most vulnerable communities.”

The service allows residents to book a visit from a qualified handyman, who provides labour at a subsidised rate and bills for parts at cost price. Cornwall Council then directly bills residents, ensuring the service is both accessible and affordable.

The Cornwall Liberal Democrats are urging Cornwall Council to reverse its decision and instead review the business model to identify efficiencies, rather than opting for immediate closure. They stress that the Handyperson Service is essential for maintaining the independence and security of vulnerable individuals across Cornwall.
